4 Tips for Using Your Heat Pump More Efficiently in Charleston, SC

You run your heat pump for most of the year, which means that it incurs wear and tear and may not perform as efficiently after a few years in Charleston, SC. Fortunately, there are ways to counteract this. Here are four tips for keeping your heat pump running efficiently this spring.

1. Change the Air Filter

Without good air circulation, your heat pump’s motor will work harder to do its job, which means premature wear. Change the air filter in your return vent every 60 to 90 days; otherwise, the dirt and debris that it traps will become a hindrance. In addition, check to see that you’re not blocking your supply vents with furniture or other obstructions.

2. Set Your Thermostat Correctly

A programmable thermostat lets you create your own cooling schedule, so if you haven’t taken advantage of this feature yet, definitely do so. As for the set point, try to keep it in the mid to upper 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Just remember that the more you lower the AC setting, the longer the heat pump air conditioning will run.

3. Set the Fan to AUTO Mode

Your heat pump should have the option to set the fan to AUTO mode. We highly recommend this, so that the fan only runs when the HVAC cycle is running.

4. Schedule Annual Maintenance

Perhaps most important of all, you should schedule annual maintenance from a professional. This will include filter replacement, thermostat calibration, a full visual inspection of the heat pump and numerous adjustments and minor fixes. These can eliminate quite a few issues that may be affecting it without your knowing it.
